The Plan of Happiness... Smurf Style
I took the kids to see the Smurfs 2 this past weekend and I was really not excited because I thought that it was going to be so stupid but guess what it was remarkably insightful and I came away feel uplifted and inspired a little bit. As everyone knows, I'm very new to all this knowledge stuff and I'm very new to a personal relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus, and I'm new to understanding not only how they love us but why they love us and the extent that that love is given. So when watching the Smurfs 2, I saw in cartoonish form the true depth of the love of God, and the true depth of the evil desires of satan, believe it or not.
Spoiler alert! If you will be devastated to know the details of the Smurfs 2 movie and perhaps the ending, then stop reading. Yes, it is that serious. In the beginning of the movie it is revealed that Smurfette was originally made out of clay in a "less than perfect" form. Papa Smurf gave her "smurf essence" and allowed her the possibility to live a good life, saying in the movie "she could be a smurf, but only as long as she chose to be". But she was kidnapped by Gargamel and he used some crazy manipulation with her to make her feel allegiance to him and to feel abandoned by Papa. When exposed to being "naughty" she chose to be naughty some of the time, eventually committing the ultimate betrayal against the Sumrfs and ending up locked in Gargamel's cage in the sewer. But guess what? Papa Smurf came to rescue her, he found her in the cage in the sewer and saved her, and ultimately defeated Gargamel with his ultimate blue "Smurf" power. He came for her because "she is my daughter, and I love her." She got herself into that cage through her betrayal and he still came to rescue her and forgave her for what she had done. Ultimately, Gargamel was defeated, and they returned to Smurf village or whatever it's called, and lived happily ever after.
I don't remember at what point in the movie I started drawing these concepts together, but I thought that it was quite profound. Like Smurfette, we are all born into a fallen state, but we can come unto God as long as we choose to. I saw the selfishness and manipulation Gargamel used against Smurfette as the same tactics used by satan to trick us. He used her birthday as the tool, something deeply personal to her, he lied to her and made her feel special so that she would do what he wanted. At no time did he care about her at all, and not only that he actively sought her destruction, he wanted to use her until she died giving him all her power. How sick is that? Then once she gave him the secret formula, he turned on her, and locked her in a cage. We all make poor choices, and sometimes we do more than that, sometimes we make the ultimate betrayal, I know I have, I've "betrayed" God more than once. When Papa Smurf broke into the sewer and saw Smurfette in the cage, I almost cried. She was locked in the cage because of her own betrayal, and I felt like I've been that girl who did stupid things and then was locked in a cage to die, spiritually, but he came for her, just like Heavenly Father came for me. He used his power to defeat Gargamel, just as the power of good will defeat the power of evil, and he saved her. He knew what she had done, he knew that she had given Gargamel the secret Smurf formula, but he came to rescue her anyway. And I know it probably sounds stupid but that was the sweetest story of all time for me. My Father in Heaven knew what I did, and he came and rescued me anyway, by providing for the atonement, by making a plan, by knowing me and caring for me personally. Like Papa Smurf, he has many other children to love and care for, but he still loves and cares for me because I'm his daughter. It was profound and very comforting.
